John Holland Group Pty Ltd, Human Resources Strategy Manager 2014 – 2015

Supporting and advising the Regional Management team for the newly formed Infrastructure South East operation which encompassed New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmanian construction activity.  During this period, I wrote the HR and Training management plans for North West Rail Link Package 3 which encompasses the construction, operation and maintenance of the new Sydney Metro.

Human Resources Strategy and Delivery Manager 2012 – 2014

A strategic delivery role providing JHG and its Business Units with a competitive edge in planning, winning and delivering work through strong people and client engagement strategies.  Relying on strong influencing skills to drive the JHG values and culture within the business and promote a culture of business excellence through governance, accountability, innovation, transparency and reporting against all established performance objectives.  This role also contributed to Corporate HR strategies and led the relevant HR programs of work in the Business Units which enabled the businesses which I supported to plan, win and deliver work. During this period, I managed the HR aspects of the divestment of the Communications Division to a related company.

Human Resources Manager, NSW/ACT Region, 2008 – 2012

Responsible for the Strategic and Transactional HR function within the NSW/ACT region supporting all John Holland businesses operating within the region.  Areas of responsibility include Industrial Relations, Learning & Development, and Human Resources generally.  Specific responsibility for John Holland business units included the NSW Civil and Building Division, the Water and Environment Division Nationally, the Communications Division Nationally, the Northern Rail Maintenance business, the Country Regional Network rail operations & maintenance business and other divisions operating within the NSW/ACT geographical area.

This included the restructuring of the business units and the establishment of New Operating Business’s such as John Holland Rail Country Regional Network which engaged an entire workforce (over 400 staff) and switched over operation from ARTC at one point in time.

Manager Human Resources, Rail Division, 2007 – 2008

Nationally responsible for all HR and Industrial Relations matters for the Rail Division.  The Division provided construction and maintenance services to the rail industry and directly employed approximately 700 persons.  Operations included complete track construction incorporating minor civil works, rail grinding and alignment, comprehensive track maintenance and signalling works.

Tenix Projects Pty Ltd , Manager Industrial Relations – Personnel, 2005 – 2007

Managed the OHS, personnel and industrial relations function within the Tenix Projects business unit.  Tenix Projects provided specialist consultant services to Government and private industry clients in the Construction Industry and specialist rail personnel to the rail industry.

Henry Walker Eltin (LSM Projects),  Manager Industrial Relations, Personnel and OHS&R, 2002 – 2005

Responsible for the Civil Division throughout Australia (including remote mine sites in WA) and metropolitan and regional projects in several states. Major functions included recruitment, OH&S management, industrial relations strategy, negotiation and management, and the strategic assessment of industrial risk and mitigation strategies on tenders throughout Australia and New Zealand.

LSM Projects Pty Ltd, Manager Industrial Relations, Personnel and OHS&R,  2002

LSM was a strategic management consultancy in the construction sector on the East Coast. Shortly after joining LSM, the business was sold to Henry Walker Eltin Pty. Ltd.

Transfield Pty Ltd, Industrial Relations Manager, 2000 – 2002

Managed all industrial issues on a wide variety of construction projects including the Eastern Gas Pipeline constructed from Sale, Victoria to Sydney. Negotiated Enterprise Agreements on new construction projects and renewed of existing agreements for ongoing business units including Telecommunications (construction and maintenance of mobile phone networks), the Process Equipment Division and very large engineering fabrication workshops.

Prepared the industrial relations components for tenders Australia wide for construction and engineering projects including major projects such as (e.g. Sydney Cross City Tunnel, Parramatta to Chatswood Rail Link and the Western Sydney Orbital), water and waste water treatment plants and heavy engineering construction for process industries.

 

Transfield Bouygues Joint Venture – Industrial Relations & OHS Manager, 1995 – 2000

The Sydney Airport Link was an $800M civil, tunnelling and rail construction project linking the Sydney rail network to the Domestic and International Airport terminals.

As the IR and OH&S Manager the scope of responsibility fell under four broad categories.

Responsible for the management of all Industrial Relations, Personnel, Payroll and Occupational Health, Safety and Rehabilitation issues on the Project.

Provided strategic guidance and management of the professional Safety Officers and the review and maintenance of the Project Safety Plan which included Hyperbaric Tunnelling operations.

Managed the setup, operation and processing of the Joint Ventures payroll for approximately 120 staff and 150 wages employees on site

Recruitment, training and eventual termination of all project salary and wages staff.

 

Transfield Pty Ltd – Industrial Relations Manager, 1992 – 1995

Transfield Construction was a national business with over 11,000 employees engaged in heavy engineering constructionManagement and co-ordination of all Industrial Relations issues for Eastern Australia.

Responsibility included the negotiation of industrial relations agreements for all of the company’s varied business units.

Management of the personnel and industrial issues during the acquisition by Transfield of Melbourne Waters’ Tunnelling Division, their Water and Sewerage Maintenance Division and their Electrical / Mechanical Maintenance Divisions Successfully negotiated the Enterprise Agreement for the Mobil Altona site contract maintenance workforce which was the only oil industry site in Australia to revert from a 35 hour to a 38 hour week. Transfield Services subsequently became the industry leader in maintenance outsourcing.
