Northern Sydney Freight Corridor – Stage 1: North Strathfield Rail Underpass Project

TfNSW – Transport Projects Division
The Northern Sydney Freight Corridor (NSFC) Program
is part of the Commonwealth Government’s Nation
Building Program. Feasibility studies undertaken for
the NSFC program have recommended a staged
series of projects along the Main North corridor.
Stage 1 of this program of works is scheduled for
completion in 2015.
The NSFC Stage 1 (NSFC 1) program includes 4
projects including:
• Hexam Passing Loop;
• Gosford Passing Loops;
• North Strathfield Rail Underpass; and
• Epping to Thornleigh Third Track.
The North Strathfield Rail Underpass project will
enable the Up Freight traffic movements on the Main
North line to access the Starthfield Goods Loop by
passing under the Main lines via a new dive and tunnel
structure, instead of through the current flat junction.
This in turn relives on of the most serious bottlenecks for the Freight and Passenger
Services on the Main North Line. In addition to the new dive and tunnel structure there will
be 3.2km on new track and a complete rebuild on Concord West Station precinct.
TfNSW engaged an the NSRU Alliance to design and construct the project works. As an
integral part of the NSRU Alliance, Rail Planning Services provides critical live rail interface
expertise in one of the busiest rail corridors in the Sydney Metropolitan area. The Rail
Planning Services role on the project is to provide technical rail systems and delivery
planning advice in the following areas:
• Construction methodologies;
• For Construction Design reviews;
• Detailed engineering discipline scope definition;
• Resolution of technical construction design and live rail interface issues and risks; and
• Develop, maintain and monitor a detailed construction staging sequence for the works.
The NSRU project will be completed in June 2015. The works carried out by Rail Planning
Services will assist TfNSW in delivering a valuable piece of transport infrastructure for the
people of NSW.
