Hornsby Yard Remodelling – Constructability Advisor

The remodeling of Hornsby Yard was vital in supporting increased services under the new 2017  timetable regimes and reducing the potential for incidents arising from SPAD’s due to poor configuration. Trains coming from the North Shore line into Hornsby were forced to travel a very low speed through the junction and into platforms 1 & 2. Crossovers immediately at the end of Platform 2 and there protecting signal created a SPAD risk.

The remodeling was aimed a removing these constraints and providing routes to support the proposed timetables, with the project itself being a complex Brownfield project.

  • Rail Planning Services were engaged by TfNSW to advise of methods and staging of construction from the pre-concept stage of design and assist in Program Development and Possession identification. RPS worked closely with Sydney Trains and TfNSW to develop concepts. The works were delivered by the NovoRail Alliance (incorporating Aurecon). Due to the extensive reconfiguration of the existing yard and the interface of both the Main North and the Shores lines special possessions and closedowns were negotiated with Sydney trains by RPS to allow the works to be completed in the required timeframe.   At this time RPS worked closely with NovoRail to develop the Overhead Wiring design which together with the track and civil works was successfully delivered and commissioned.

  • RPS worked closely with TfNSW, Sydney Trains and NovoRail to develop a design based on an achievable and efficient construction methodology and staging sequence. The design was refined through collaboration to minimize impact on the operating network and effectively use scarce possessions. Possessions were negotiated with and supported by Sydney Trains. The project was successfully delivered.
