Canberra Light Rail – Stage 2

Light Rail renaissance

Client:

ARUP (for Transport Canberra)

Location:

Canberra, ACT

Completion:

Expected 2024

Following the successful Stage 1 of the Canberra Light Rail line that served more than one million passengers within the first three months, Canberra Light Rail – Stage 2 is a proposed extension of Canberra’s light rail network from the city centre to Woden in Canberra. The line will create a north-to-south mass transit spine for the city by connecting its major education, entertainment, healthcare and government hubs.

The proposed alignment of Canberra Light Rail Stage 2 will interface with the Stage 1 at the Alinga Street Terminus, with numerous upgrades to existing structures including bridges, relocation/ upgrades to existing utilities, drainage infrastructure and urban design works along the route (including within the Parliamentary zone).

ARUP were engaged as the technical advisor, with Rail Planning Services to provide constructability input as part of the Definition Design submission. This included design reviews, construction methodology and staging advice in the form of a Constructability Report. The report gives a high-level overview of the construction methodology, scope, staging, delivery methods, potential risks (including possible mitigations) and timeframe required.
