North Strathfield Rail Underpass

Complex brownfield tunnel construction

Client:

TfNSW (through NSRU Alliance)

Location:

Strathfield, NSW

Completion:

2015

The North Strathfield Rail Underpass project enabled Up-Freight traffic movements on the Main North line to access the Strathfield Goods Loop by passing under the Main lines via a new dive and tunnel structure.

As an integral part of the NSRU Alliance (John Holland, Bouygues), Rail Planning Services provided technical rail systems and delivery planning advice. This included:

  • Developing, maintaining and monitoring a detailed construction staging sequence for the works through pre-determined (by Rail Planning Services) construction methodologies and detailed engineering discipline scope definition; and
  • Resolving technical construction design and live rail interface risks and issues.

The North Strathfield Rail Underpass Project was completed in June 2015, removing the freight trains need to cross over the existing tracks on the Main North Line, increasing capacity and reliability of freight and passenger trains between Strathfield and Newcastle.
